Bad Day? 15 Ways to Banish Negative Mood

Even if you're generally a positive person, every once in a while, something happens that utterly ruins your mood. It can happen to anybody, and even the happiest people aren't immune from the occasional bad day.

What really, really, REALLY wrecks my day is having one of those guilty sleep-ins, when I go to bed extremely late, and I just can't wake up before noon.

I mean, it's completely understandable. The body has to catch up on all that missed sleep. Still, waking up that late makes me feel groggy, my head hurts, and my mood is just completely in the gutter. I'm angry at myself, I'm angry at everyone else and I just feel like crying and going back to bed (and maybe crying some more).

And this foul mood just goes on and on and on, never ceasing, until I eventually go numb from all the self loathing and find myself browsing the stupidest websites at 4 a.m. and finally dragging myself back to bed.

So, what should we do to get back on your feet after we've woken up into a really crappy day?

1.TAKE A DAY OFF.

Decide not to do anything school or work related that day. Unless you have to. Even then, only do what is absolutely necessary, everything else can and will wait.

2.TAKE A NAP.

Of course, this one doesn't really apply in my case. But if you've just about had enough of everything, then taking a nap is a legit way to recharge your batteries and hopefully feel a bit better. Just don't sleep through the day, there are so many other great things that you can do! You could, for example ...

3.READ A LOVELY BOOK.

If you love to read, you probably have this one story that fills you to the brim with inspiration and warm, fuzzy feelings (With me, Harry Potter definitely wins). Wrap yourself up in a blanky, make your favourite hot beverage and read. If you're not a lover of literature, watch a movie or an episode of your favourite series.

4.LISTEN TO SOME INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC.

Same goes with tunes – some of them make you feel like anything is possible and can instantly improve a somewhat crappy mood. Some suggestions are: Mumford and Sons – Holland Road, Gary Barlow – Let Me Go, and Imagine Dragons – I Bet MyLife.

5.HAVE A TREAT.

Enjoy some of your favourite foods. But careful – stuffing your face with endless quantities of goodies will actually make you feel worse.

6.GET SOME AIR.

Fresh air can help clear out the mind and improve the mood immensely. Go for a walk, sit on the balcony for a while, or even just open the window to let negativity out and positivity in. Bonus: Sunlight boosts vitamin D production, which will make you feel even better.

7.CLEAN A BIT.

Same as with stuffy air, crammed, dirty spaces are magnets for foul moods. Clearing out just one surface, like your desk, will make you feel a thousand times better.

8.FIX SOMEONE ELSE'S BAD DAY.

There's nothing that makes us feel quite like helping others in need. You're probably not the only one having it rough right now. Find someone else who's going through hardship, and brighten their day a bit. Give some money to a homeless person or even just give your cranky friend a big hug. Seeing a smile on their face will make your bad mood go away. Oh, and speaking of hugging ...

9.SNUGGLE.

The physical proximity of another living creature helps calm the nerves and restore peace to the soul. If someone you love is near, be it a partner, a friend, or a pet, give them a cuddle. It will release the endorphins, making you and them feel great.

10.CRY.

Sometimes you just have to. It's OK. Just let it out.

11.LAUGH.

They say that laughter is the best medicine. And it's true. Especially in the cases of extreme bad mood. Read/watch/listen to something funny and work out those abs.

12.BREATHE.

Do some breathing exercises or just practise deep breathing while clearing your mind of negative distractions. Incidentally, breathing is also a good way to deal with stress.

13.DO THE STRETCHIES.

Some mild exercise will get your blood pumping, increase oxygen flow to your body and make you feel better all in all. You don't have to go jogging or visit a gym – some simple stretches (like the awesome Sun Salutation) will do the trick just fine.

14.CONFIDE.

Talk to someone. If no one's around, write it down. Even a simple sentence like »I don't know why but I feel so crappy right now« can lighten your load and fix your mood a lot.

15.NIP IT IN THE BUD.

Next time, try preventing bad days before they even happen. For me, it would be going to bed earlier and waking up sooner for a productive start of the day.

Just remember: One bad day is not a sign of a bad life. You can and you will get through this bout of negativity. Take days like these as a reminder and an opportunity to love yourself some more and do more things that you like to do.
